This project aims to introduce ultrasound medicine into the field of basic research and clinical application in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The project focuses on conducting in-depth studies on vascular function testing in diabetic patients with different TCM syndromes at an early stage of vascular disease. By combining the use of echo-tracking technology (eTRACKING, ET), Wave Intensity (WI), Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV), and other techniques, the study aims to investigate early vascular function changes and their mechanisms. It is hoped that this will provide more objective evidence for the early prevention of vascular diseases. The project also introduces new ultrasound technologies into the research of TCM pulse diagnosis and acupuncture, exploring new approaches for modernizing TCM research. The project team began to study the application of ultrasound technology in vascular disease detection since 2005. Initially, they were among the first to explore the principles, methodology, parameter meanings, and influencing factors of ET technology. They conducted vascular elasticity tests on carotid and lower limb arteries of a total of 628 patients with various diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, etc., to detect vascular lesions early and explore predisposing factors. Starting from 2008, the project team introduced WI technology into China for the first time and published papers related to WI. They were among the first to discuss the naming, principles, and significance of indicators of WI, defining the timing phases of waveforms such as W1, W1-W2, R-W1. Subsequently, they innovatively incorporated WI technology into the study of pulse patterns, explaining the mechanisms of pulse patterns from both kinetic and potential energy aspects. By adding blood flow information to the existing pulse pattern instrument research, they enriched the information content of pulse pattern studies. Obtained a utility model patent authorization for the 'Traditional Chinese Medicine Pulse Wave Intensity Apparatus'. By jointly using PWV, vascular endothelial function, and ET technologies to detect changes in early vascular elasticity of diabetes patients with different TCM syndromes, we explored the characteristics of vascular lesions in diabetic patients with different TCM syndromes, providing a basis for clinical syndrome differentiation and treatment. Furthermore, elastography was introduced into the acquisition of standard acupuncture sections and the study of 'Qi reception'. We explored new ways to use modern technology to study traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment methods from multiple aspects. Additionally, it was also the first to use Doppler technology to synchronously study hemodynamics of multiple segments of blood vessels throughout the body, providing the possibility to analyze the mechanical changes and kinetic and potential energy changes of multiple blood vessels at different phases of the cardiac cycle. In an innovative manner, Doppler probes and pulse wave sensors were used together to detect arterial PWV. An application for and the grant of a utility model patent for 'Ultrasonic Arteriosclerosis Detector' has been made, which has expanded the application scope of ultrasonic instruments and saved medical costs. The project has published 45 papers, with 316 citations, obtained 2 utility model patents, published 1 book, and delivered more than 10 keynote speeches at international and national academic conferences. It has trained 4 graduate students and 12 postgraduate students.
